Stamped concrete patios are known for their beauty, durability, and custom finish — but like any high-end surface, they need a little care to stay looking their best. If you’ve invested in a stamped concrete patio (or are considering one), here’s exactly how to protect that investment and enjoy it for decades to come.
At Don Jacinto’s Stamped Concrete, we believe in educating our clients — because decorative concrete should be more than just beautiful on day one. It should stay beautiful.
1. Keep It Clean — But Gently
Routine cleaning is one of the easiest ways to maintain stamped concrete. Use a soft broom or leaf blower to remove dirt and debris. For deeper cleaning, a garden hose or a pressure washer on a low setting works well. Avoid harsh chemicals or degreasers — they can break down the sealer over time.
Pro Tip: A mild soap and water mix with a soft-bristle brush is perfect for removing stains without damaging the surface.
2. Reseal Every 2–3 Years
Sealer is what gives stamped concrete its rich color and protects it from weather, moisture, and UV damage. Over time, sealers wear down — especially in areas with heavy foot traffic or harsh winters like the Hudson Valley.
We recommend professional resealing every 2 to 3 years depending on usage and exposure. This keeps the surface protected, prevents fading, and revives that beautiful "wet-look" finish.
3. Be Cautious in Winter
Salt and de-icers can damage stamped concrete, especially during freeze-thaw cycles. They can cause surface scaling, spalling, and discoloration.
Instead:
Use sand for traction.
Clear snow with a plastic shovel, not metal (metal can scrape the surface).
Avoid snow blowers with metal blades.
4. Avoid Heavy Impact or Dragging Objects
Stamped concrete is durable, but it’s not invincible. Avoid dragging heavy furniture, sharp tools, or large planters directly on the surface. Use felt pads or rubber bases where possible.
This helps prevent scratching the sealer or creating pressure points that could eventually chip the surface.
5. Treat Stains Quickly
Spills from grease, oil, wine, or plant materials can stain if left too long. The faster you clean them, the better. For tough stains, use a mild degreaser — but always test it on a small area first.
Never use acid-based cleaners. They can etch the surface and damage the color and texture.
6. Watch for Small Cracks — and Address Them Early
Over time, hairline cracks may appear due to natural movement of the ground. If you notice any, contact a professional to assess and seal them before they spread. Catching small issues early can prevent bigger repairs down the line.
Protect the Look. Preserve the Value.
With just a little care and attention, your stamped concrete patio can remain a showpiece of your home for 20+ years. At Don Jacinto’s Stamped Concrete, we don't just install concrete — we help clients maintain it for life.
